Rusinga Beach Latrines

Picture
The Rusinga Island community in Nyanza Province of Kenya is on the shore of Lake Victoria and is one of the poorest areas in Kenya. There are several fishing communities along the shoreline, most of which are centred on small beach communities. There are many migrant workers in the region, all depending on fishing for a meagre livelihood.

Sanitation facilites in these beach communities are basically non-existant. People use the bush and shoreline as "green toilets" and when it rains, excrement is washed into the lake where people bathe, gather water for washing and even drinking.
The lack of sanitation facilities contributes to a high prevalence of water-borne diarrheal diseases.

In partnership with a local NGO -Badilisha Ecovillage Foundation Trust -CanAssist is raised funds to construct Ventilated Pit Latrines in six of the local beach communities.  We also installed washing room facilities at two of these beach villages.
